Network engineering interviews in 2026 are no longer just about reciting protocol facts. The strongest companies now test breadth, mechanism, system thinking, communication, and behavioural judgment in the same loop.

What companies usually assess now

  • Technical foundations: routing, switching, transport, Domain Name System (DNS), and core internet protocols
  • Troubleshooting ability: can you isolate faults methodically under ambiguity?
  • Cloud fluency: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), hybrid networking, and security boundaries
  • Design reasoning: trade-offs, scale limits, resilience, and failure handling
  • Behavioural depth: ownership, conflict handling, prioritization, and impact

The typical interview sequence

Many candidates still imagine a linear, textbook-style technical screen. Real loops are more varied. A common pattern is:
